Assisted Reproduction (IVF)

In 1978 the first "test-tube baby" was born to worldwide amazement, the application of science to reproductive biology was nothing short of a breakthrough. Since then the process of in-vitro fertilization (more commonly known as IVF) has greatly increased in its technological scope and success to offer hope to large numbers of childless couples.

Screening for Suitability

Before you consider IVF you will need to be carefully screened to firstly see if your problems can be overcome through simpler methods and secondly if you are suitable for IVF treatment.

We offer packages to travel to Singapore for IVF screening. Enjoy a short holiday in Singapore as a couple whilst your suitability for IVF is determined. Contact us for details of screening packages.

You should also consult your local IVF clinic for screening first before considering IVF.

Procedures

  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
First eggs and sperm are collected and are then brought together to fertilize. Once fertilized the embryo grows for a short time and is then reimplanted back into the womb.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Sometimes the sperm are unable to correctly enter the egg, so to get around this the sperm is directly injected into the egg to begin the process of fertilization.
  • Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA)
  • Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA)
MESA and TESA are two techniques to recover sperm when they are absent from semen. Immature sperm are taken from the testicles and used for ICSI (see above) to perform in vitro fertilization.
  • Gamete Intrafallopian Tube Transfer (GIFT)
First, a womans eggs are removed and are then mixed with sperm. This mixture is then placed into the fallopian tube. In this procedure fertilization actually occurs inside the fallopian tube
  • Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT or TET)
ZIFT is very similar to GIFT (see above), except in this case the embryo is first fertilized outside the body and then the embryo is then placed into the fallopian tube to continue its development.
  • Assisted Hatching (AH)
Fertilized eggs actually have an egg shell! Its scientific name is the 'zona pelucida' and before the embryo implants it must 'hatch' out of its egg. Sometimes eggs fail to properly hatch, hence this procedure can assist the eggs to hatch, making pregnancy a possibility.
  • Donor Sperm/Egg Programmes
For whatever reason one or other of sperm or egg is not suitable. In these cases donor sperm and donor eggs are available.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture has been shown to significantly increase the chances of pregnancy through IVF. Click here for a story from the BBC.

Scientists do not know why it works, but in scientific tests it has been shown to increase the chances of conception by nearly 50%. One idea is that acupuncture can affect the nervous system, making the womb more receptive to carry an embryo.

If you come to Singapore with us we will book you into an acupuncture clinic where Doctors trained in traditional Chinese medicine will prescribe you a course of acupuncture as well as various herbal treatments that can help you conceive.
